The North Carolina Crafts Gallery is a favorite for locals and tourists alike. The Crafts Gallery, which is located on the corner of Weaver Street and West Main Street in Carrboro offers a wide assortment of items handcrafted by North Carolina artisans. You’ll find contemporary and traditional pottery, blown glass, wood, jewelry, metalwork, toys, folk art, garden sculpture, kaleidoscopes, baskets, fiber art and more. The Gallery currently carries the work of more than 500 North Carolinians, from the mountains to the shore.

The Crafts Gallery also hosts two shows a month. Shows begin the first of each month and give the featured artist the opportunity to showcase an entire body of work. Customers are often able to meet the featured artists during the Chapel Hill/Carrboro 2nd Friday Art Walks.

The NC Crafts Gallery was established in 1989 by Sherri Ontjes of Carrboro, NC. An artist herself, and former art teacher, Sherri wanted to bring some of the rich tradition of North Carolina craft to the area. She traveled across the state meeting artists and craftsmen, visiting their studios, and purchasing their wares. After 15 years of owning the business, Sherri was ready to retire.

In July of 2004 the NC Crafts Gallery was purchased by Sara Latta Gress. Originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Sara moved to Chapel Hill in 1999 and began working at the University of North Carolina. Sara took a part time job at the NC Crafts Gallery to earn extra money to help pay for her upcoming wedding. What began as a fun weekend job turned into a passion for pottery and other art.

“Owning a gallery is something I never thought I’d do, but it is exactly what I should be doing. I’m so thankful for the opportunity Sherri has given me,” says Sara.

Sara has a degree in Communication from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, PA. She hopes that her background in business and public relations, as well as her love for North Carolina craft will help her continue to provide her customers with quality work from the state’s finest artists and craftsmen, superior customer service, and a pleasant shopping experience.
